It's hard to believe it's been almost 15 years since we met on that awful night. Even though we hadn't known each other before, we had a few things in common...a couple Portland guys a long way from home. The feelings will stay with me as long as I live...the shock of getting the call, determination of getting you out of the house and moving toward the hospital, the jokes we shared in the ambulance, the connection of a shared hometown, the elation of getting you there in better shape than we'd found you...and the rage of finding out you hadn't made it. I think of you often, Rick. Each time I'm back in Portland, wondering if I'll run into your family. Wondering what I'd say to them...hoping I could keep it together long enough to share my memories, hoping it would somehow ease their pain... The memories will stay with me forever, and with that...you are not forgotten. Rest easy my friend...

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 13th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace, especially your mom. Thanks to your friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Rest In Peace.

Rick, today it was ten years since your death. I want you to know that you are with me all the time and that I live each day in your memory. I have tried to dedicate my life to helping other officers who have experienced tragedy, I do this in memory of you and I hope you approve. I know you are with your father now, a man who forgave me and who I will never forget. Continue to rest peacefully brother, you are always with me.

This is so sad and my heart goes out to Rick's family. Although it happened 9
years ago, I can only imagine the pain they will endure for the rest of their
lives. With love from one coast of America to the other.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Rick, Your sisters' wedding is coming up and it has me thinking of you and wishing you were here. I think of you often and wish you knew my boys! They would have adored you. It so hard to beleive you have been gone so long. The day of your funeral I will never forget. IT was the saddest day of my life. I hope you know I am looking out for everyone. I miss you and feel so cheated that you are gone. I can close my eyes and see your face and hear that crazy laugh! You had energy like no one else and had so much more to do. We go on with life but you are always in our hearts. I hope you and your dad are together. xoxoxo

No law enforcement agency has more of my former high school / college buddies than the Charleston Police Department. As a child, I dreamed of being a "Trooper" for the S.C. Highway Patrol. Funny-the Charleston Police Department was the only S.C. agency that I ended up applying with.

I can still remember Marine/CPD Chief John Conroy (RIP). I can still remember Officer Snider (RIP), who walked a foot beat in downtown Charleston (murdered in 1979 by a shoplifter). I went on to join LAPD. But my love for the guys in Charleston, always brought me back to put on free tactical seminars / Roll Call training.

I never had the opportunity to meet You, Officer Love, but I was just as sad hearing about Your death, as I am today as it is being anounced that another Lowcountry law enforcement official has been confirmed (throug DNA) to have died in the line-of-duty. May You Rest-In-Peace.
