Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Lieutenant Tonya Doreen Gillikin

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

Tonya,
It is coming up on the 5th anniversary of your death. I still see patrol cars pulled on the side of the road next to the cemetary with officers coming to visit. It seems like only yesterday you were working at Beaufort P.D. Carteret County and the world have not changed much. This world gets meaner and rougher everyday. We will carry your memory with us for always. We miss you!!

A friend in law enforcement.

When we heard of your death our hearts sank. We so wanted to send people to help, but we knew we were too far away. You were part of the thin blue line and separates good from evil. Our hearts go out to your family and all though who had the honor to serve with and know you.

You are a true American hero.

I learned of your death the morning after you fell. I visited the Enfield PD recently and saw the memorial they have made for you. There are teddy bears galore! Jenny told me how you loved them. There are pictures of you and your fellow officers. And there is the eulogy written by Chief Gregory. It speaks volumes about how all of us that didn't know you felt as well as the ones who knew and loved you. You made the ultimate sacrifice. You have inspired all of us, and you will NEVER be forgotten...never.

In the words of Carl Gregory, "We shall return to our community with more dedication, commitment and determination to protect and serve, so when that glorious day comes when we reunite with our sister, she will embrace us and say 'Well done.'"

Tonya, I know that during the months of May and June, 2001, you were sitting high and looking down to see the outcome of your trial. We sat there every day hoping to see the person that took you from us would get "justice," but you know the justice system and how things somehow just don't go the way we want it to go. You are still very much alive in our hearts and we continue to express the love and concern you had for your profession. All females that are entering into law enforcement missed a chance of not personally knowing you and this dedication you held so dear.
Your memorial will always be with us and those that held you so dear. I only wish I could have stayed with you longer on the night someone decided it was time for you to go. I miss you so much!
