Reflections for Police Officer Shawn Phillip Bandy

I did not know you, but I was thinking about you today. I didn't begin my career until almost 15 years after your passing, but people from the Ninth Precinct and all over our department still talk about you. Thank you for what you did that night.

I often think about Shawn's family and fellow officers and hope they are all doing well. I was involved in locating Langford and Moore in Erie, Pa after the shooting. Our thoughts and prayer go out to everyone involved on this 20th anniversary.

20 years have gone by and I think of you all the time. Everything you’ve missed, good and bad. My life turned out good despite the horrible tragedy of our short time together and I finally have a beautiful baby girl. You are always loved, and respected. You were my hero and I promise to make sure you are never forgotten.

Thank you for your service my brother in blue.. enjoy your heavenly reward.

Shawn it's been 20 years to the day since we went to work that night. I thought of you every time I went to work every day since then. I've cried more times than I can count hoping that I didn't fail you that night and that you knew that I did my best that night and every day since to honor you. I loved the with we did. I loved the cops we were together. I'd give anything to give you back the last 20 years with your baby. I'm sorry I couldn't do more that night. I've fought harder, trained harder, studied harder and worked harder to try to carry some of the burden I know you would have. I cry right now hoping you know how hard it's been without you. Someday...9-9 on the way! Love Jeff

It’s been a real struggle for our Department as of lately. Losing Officers to other agencies and to the dangers of this job. I ask you old friend to please watch over each and every one of us. Miss you more then you ever know. Save a seat next to the stage for me my friend.

I will be riding in the 2018 Police Unity Tour in your honor. We were partners at the Tenth and you will carry me through the 300+ bicycle miles from NJ to DC during police week.
It will be a privilege, and I will carry your picture and tell my favorite stories to people I meet along the route.
The Detroit Police Department feels this tragic loss to this day, as I do every day, your death has affected me more than I could have ever known.

A great person and the son of Sgt Max Bandy. Rest in Heaven both of you. He valiantly worked as a Police Officer at the start of his career in Detroits Tenth Precinct where i first met him. I went on to work with his father Max Bandy at Armed Robbery Unit. Both were great men. God Bless their souls and loved ones.

Shawn was a wonderful friend. He was kind and generous and always willing to lend a hand. I miss his laugh and his sense of humor. I still think about him everyday. I know he's proud to be remembered as a hero!
I want to remind Mr. and Mrs. Bandy that he loved you so much! Max you were his hero when I met him in the 5th grade and you were his hero the day he died, don't ever forget that.

I thought about you, and your parents, over Christmas this year. I remembered how profound of a loss that they must've felt during their Christmas holidays annually, for the past 15 years...

I still remember standing in the front row at your graveside, as taps was being played while you were laid to rest. That was one of the absolute worst experiences of my life. I still remember the visceral feeling that I felt as I choked out a tear. That was terrible, and I still vividly remember it.

A few of us have also been shot at, like you were, and we're still here, left to wonder how we were so lucky, and why you weren't on your fateful day.....That fateful day when we heard over the radio '3 officers down'..... Divine intervention is the only legitimate explanation that I can surmise. God had a plan for you, brother, and took you from us far too soon.

You were one genuinely decent guy, and a stand-out cop amongst a group of the very best police officers in the whole country (Detroit Police Officers).

I wish that I could've helped you somehow on that fateful day.

I'll always be proud to have been your brother in blue.
