Sergeant Colon-Crespo,

When we look at your last days on earth we get saddened by the violence you suffered, but it would be selfish of us to believe that god did not want you in heaven with him. Well, he called you on that day because he needed you to patrol the streets of heaven and from what I can feel you are doing an excellent job.

Que dios llene a su familia de paz y ilumine sus caminos al saber que tu los estas vigilando. Gracias mi hermano por su sacrificio.

Sir, I am a Border Patrol agent and one of my classmates from the academy is a former Puerto Rico Police Officer. He knew both you, and your partner who were tragically killed. He shared with us the video of your murders. It really struck home the type of work we do on a daily basis. May you rest in peace. We have the watch.

I have watched the video of you and Sgt. Ramirez-Castro's last moments of life in that bakery. Myself and thousands of other law enforement officer's in the nation want you and your families to know that you did not die in vein. We have learned so much from this incident, and I am sure it has saved the lives of many brother and sister officers since 1998. May your souls rest in peace.

I have been using the video of this awful tragedy to train new hire officers in the use of officer safety tactics for several years now. There are many things that could have happened differently that day. Many of the officers I train have complained that there were things these officers could have done more to protect themselves, and I remind them to thank these two officers for making them realize the importance of proper cover and to always be prepared for the unexpected. The families of these two brave men should be proud to know that many officers will remember what has happened to them, and will learn from their misfortune.

August 24, 2006

To the family and loved ones of Sergeant Billy Colon-Crespo and his fellow officers with the Puerto Rico Police Department:

On this the eighth anniversary of Billy's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. Billy's professionalism and dedication will never be forgotten, nor will his valor and courage.

I hope that God is holding him in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.
I am so sorry that Billy was robbed of his life so tragically, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Billy gave to his community and the citizens of Puerto Rico, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 24, 2001.
