Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sheriff's Sergeant Roosevelt Walker, Jr.

I will always remember the times we had together as young LEOs in the PPD. Just the other day I was thinking about the last time we spoke and you told me to take care of myself. You was like a brother to me always cautious about my safety and I miss you. RIP my brother.

To a true friend, Roosevelt. I can't find the words to express my true feelings of how much you meant to my family and me. I love you "Big Brother" rest on in peace until we are back together again in the presence of the Lord.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 14th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections, and your wife for sharing your love story.

Rest In Peace.

Divine Presence

He came to me in the morning

As His laughter rang in my ears
Get up! Get Up the day is young
Rise NOW and damn your fears!

Well, He came to me in the midday

As I wandered all forlorn
Move on, Take heed!
I heard him shout
Before this day be gone..

He returned to me in the afternoon

As the sun began to sink
Lift up your head, walk tall and proud
Who cares what others think?

Then, He came to me in the evening

He told me I’d done my best
He placed His arms around my form
In Him I’ll take my rest…

"There is nothing sweeter in the world of existence than prayer. Man must live in a state of prayer. The most blessed condition is the condition of prayer and supplication. Prayer is conversation with God. The greatest attainment or the sweetest state is none other than conversation with God. It creates spirituality, creates mindfulness and celestial feelings, begets new attractions of the Kingdom and engenders the susceptibilities of the higher intelligence."

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I keep a picture of Roosevelt in my office to remind me of the many things he taught me, not only about police work, but also about life. Roosevelt knew about loyalty and friendship. I am saddened that I never got the chance to thank him. Thank you Sgt. Walker for always mentoring, guiding, and encouraging! I miss you.

Not much has been said about you. I live in Escambia County and I am doing a memorial for our local fallen ones. I'll do something nice for, Roosevelt. Thank you for putting your uniform on that day...and I'm sorry you never made it home. You had a great smile!

Keep smiling down on us!

I AM WRITING THIS TO TELL ABOUT TWO TRUE HERO'S. ON 5-22-98 DEPUTY RESPONED TO SGT. WALKER FOR A OFFICER IN TROUBLE CALL. ON THERE ARRIVAL THEY HAD TO PYHICAL FIGHT A WOMAN WHO WAS UNDER ARREST. AFTER THE ALTERCATION THE OFFICER WENT BACK IN TO FIND SGT. WALKER ON THE GROUND AND NOT BREATHING. DEPUTY'S WALTER MATTHEWS AND DERRICK SIMS PREFORMED CPR ON SGT. WALKER AND KEPT HIM ALIVE TILL EMS COULD ARRIVE. SGT. WALKER DIED AFTER ARRIVING AT THE HOSPITAL. THOSE DEPUTYS CALLED SGT. WALKER A FRIEND AND THEY HAD THE UP MOST REPECT FOR HIM. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT NOT ALL PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO TRY TO SAVE A LIFE, BUT THEY DID AND FOR THAT THEY ARE HERO'S. SGT. WALKER EVERY YEAR WE VISIT THE FLOIDA OFFICERS MEMORIAL AND WE SEE YOUR NAME AND REFLECT ON THAT NIGHT AND WHAT YOU BROUGHT US. WILL SHALL NEVER FORGET YOU.
