Lynn, I often think of you and go back to the day you and I were hunting and we were talking about joining law enforcement.
I remember you saying that as much as you loved being outdoors you were going to work with Florida Wildlife and I chose city police as my career.
You Were an inspiration to me as well as all who knew you.

Today, we in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Class 39 honored Officer Ray Barnes with a memorial workout. The loss of Officer Barnes left a hole in the heart of our Law Enforcement family. His ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty is a testament to the dangers of our career and his dedication to protecting Florida’s natural resources. We shall continue to push ourselves and prepare for the future so that we can live up to the expectation Officer Barnes has set for us. It is our honor to carry on his memory. Though he may be gone, he is certainly not forgotten.

Respectfully,

FWC Recruit Class 39

Like so many before us, Officer Ray Barnes showed his love for the wilderness by protecting our natural resources so others could partake in their greatness. His dedication to serving and protecting the wildlife did not go unnoticed as he was a nominee for Officer of the Year in 1987. As FWC Class 31 participates in this Memorial Workout to remember him, may we all be blessed with the same dedication, integrity, and courage that Officer Barnes lived by, and never give up protecting those things which we are passionate about and sworn to protect. We thank you for your service and sacrifice and wish to honor you in all that we do.

On behalf of FWC recruit class 28, we want to thank you for your courage and determination to protect what we stand for as an agency. We completed one of our hardest memorial work outs in your honor to remember your sacrifice and hard work. Class 28 will strive to continue what you and the other officers have started and strongly believed in.

Class 28 will always remember you and your sacrifice.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Lynn and I hunted together as young men and he and I joined law enforcement around the same time. It was very hard for me to loose such a great cousin and friend. I often think of the times he and I spent together and think what a great influnce he was to me and my decision to become a law enforcement officer. Lynn I love you and will always hold you in the highest light. P.S. I hope the turkey hunting up stairs is as good for you as it was here on earth. Your cuz jim!
