Reflections for Police Officer II Steven Gerald Gajda

Officer Gajda it has been over 7 years since that awful New Years Day in 1998. I just attended the police memorial day here in Fairbanks, Alaska to honor those officers killed in the line of duty, I was present because my son was also killed Jan 1, l998. What a terrible way to bring in the New Year.
You, Steven and my son Kevin together ushered in that day giving your lives to protect and serve not thinking of yourselves and the price you might have to pay. My heart goes out to your family, friends, co-workers - as the loss is still great in their hearts. Rest in peace and say hello to my son.

Though Officer Gajda had passed before i had even became an officer, when i saw his photo I instantly felt a connection. I come from a large law enforcement family. My father was an officer for 28 years in which he also served on the Federal Drug Task Force, my sister has been an officer for 11 years and has been promoted to Detective, and I have been an officer for 2 1/2 years. I just wanted to let the Gajda family know that he is not forgotten and did not lose his life in vein. To this day there are still people that think of their son. God Bless

Steve, I remember driving past the the party where you lost your life that New Year's eve. I heard someone yell out a profanity in my direction. I stopped in front of that party and began to get out of the car.I wanted to get out and approach the crowd and disperse the party. I looked at my partner, a new probationer, who seemed scared and unsure of herself, and I decided to let it go.I drove off, only to hear the help call less than two minutes later. Steve, had I known it would have cost you your life, I would have engaged that crowd all by my self, at whatever the price. Steve, I miss you, buddy, and the practical jokes you liked to play. You got me real good, once or twice. See you in the end, John (4CRASH54)

I used to hate New Year's Eve for this very reason. Dodging bullets on 12/31 is no fun. Look at the results.
As you already know, Jesus Loves You. So do we!

Steve,
It has been four years now since you have left us but it still hurts all of us at Hollenbeck just as much. You are still thought of frequently and missed just as much.
God rest your soul Steve.

Steve was an academy classmate of mine at the Los Angeles Police Academy in 1990. He will be missed for his sense of humor, concern for others, and unfailing sense of duty. God bless you, Steve, for making up a part of the thin blue line, and doing for others what they would not even do for themselves. Your bravery, courage, and tenacity are a tribute to all of law enforcement, the LAPD, and Class 5-90.

Save me a place at the cafe counter; we'll catch up later.
