To Deputy Hoenig and His Family,

I was a trainee at the South Gate Police Department when I learned of the circs behind Deputy Hoenigs tragic death.

My T.O. shared the story of the tragic event that led to his death.

He was doing what a good hardworking Deputy Sheriff would be doing... Jamming the bad guys... Going out on a good ped stop investigating 925 activity.

Everytime I go on a pedstop I think tactically about the issues involved in making that stop and staying safe.

This job is dangerous and it is fine individuals like you that put others before yourself. You were an excellent crime fighter.

You are truly missed by all at Century Station.

I have witnessed the honor and tradition of the fine men and women that serve as Deputy Sheriffs at Century Station.

I have passed the fallen memorial wall and have seen your picture displayed there. After personally hearing your story I look at your picture much more differently.

Yearly at Century Station they pay tribute to every Deputy Sheriff on the anniversary. You will never be forgetten. Thank you for your dedication, sacrifice, and courage.

Mike,
As I sit here on this day, my eyes still fill with tears at the loss of my brother, best friend and fishing partner. I left SDSO this year to move my family across the country. It saddens me that my wife and my little girls don't get to meet thier uncle and my hero.

11 years and not one single day goes by that I don't think of you or talk to you. I wouldn't change that for the world. I want to be be 70 years old, fly fishing the same waters we used to and having a good laugh with you.

Be safe. I miss you.

I didn't know you but I attended your funeral. I remembered the song, "The Dance" by Garth Brooks playing during a video presentation. I just happened to play it now and it still reminds me of you. You made the ultimate sacrifice and for that we are thankful and grateful. You will not be forgotten!

Mike,

I can't believe how long it has been, yet I still feel like we worked together just a short while ago. You are missed. When I was a field sergeant I often referred to you and referenced the impact you made on me during briefings. Your life has touched everyone who knew you and your impact will remain for generations to come.

Rest in peace, Bro.

Mike you are still dearly missed. We went back a long way from our days as Los Angeles Public Library Security Officers.

You joined the county marshal's and I joined the LAPD.

I was working morning watch LAPD Wilshire Div on the night you passed.

When I got home that morning I heard that a deputy sheriff was killed but the name hadn't been released yet.

I never figured out just how I knew but I was certain that you were that deputy and when I saw your photo on tv I was speechless.

When I overcame the initial shock I recalled a conversation we had outside the Burger King on Washington Bl across from the traffic court where you worked.

I was working patrol out of LAPD Central Div going on C7 when I saw you and stopped so we could talk.

I noticed that you were carrying a 9mm and you said "you guys are still carrying wheel guns?" I said were still not authorized to carry the 9. Then you said, "I gotta' carry this 'cause I'm not that good a shot". We laughed and went on our way.

Those words still resonate in my head because you never even got the chance to put a round down range...it pains me to this day brother.

You were a great friend Mike and I truly miss you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Thank you for your sacrifice and dedication. We deal with cowards each day we place our uniform on. A coward took your life that night. You did what you could, so that a family could be safe that night. Your sacrifice saved another life from being taken. That is what I call a HERO!... Thanks for having the courage... Rest easy my brother, until we meet in heaven...

To the family and friends of Deputy Michael Hoenig, and his fellow officers with the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept:

On behalf of our entire family, I wish to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Deputy Hoenig was brutally murdered eight years ago. His dedication and valor will never be forgotten.

Our family grieves with you and for you.
We share your agony as we lost our beloved Larry Lasater of the Pittsburg Police Dept. when he was fatally shot on April 23, 2005 during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers. Larry, like Michael, was shot in the neck.

May you continue to be comforted by the caring and support of your law enforcement family, and other police survivors.

I am glad that the despicable criminal who committed this terrible act was soon apprehended, and justice served by the appropriate sentence. I hope that complete justice is rendered with the sentence actually being carried out.

This refection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Deputy Hoenig gave to his community as a law enforcement officer and to his country, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on October 30, 1997.

Phyllis Loya, mother of Larry Lasater, Pittsburg Police Dept, eow 4/24/05

Dear Mike,
I think of you often.
7 years now..but still as painful. By now you know that our bud Bob is with you. I hope you guys are fishing up there together. I miss you both. Those fishing trips were the best. Watch over your buddies.
until we meet again my friend
