I graduated LASD Class #311 and was assigned to PDC East Facility (Old Max), where Shane had worked. There was a nice memorial park and gym there in his honor. I'd look at all of his photos and memorabilia in the gym, and think of him to this day. I have told this story to several of my coworkers as a tragic lesson of the importance of the gun and the badge always going together. Shayne did not deserve to die and should be remembered as a hero- A terrible loss for us all.

I was at LASO Class 363 graduation and it was so heartwarming to see them dedicate their class to you. Also, to see your father there on your behalf, I can't begin to imagine what an empty void your family has felt without you these past ten years....Rest in Peace and God Bless.

Tommorrow Class 363 will run in your honor ! All that you have given will live on through the lives you mentored. A special moment in time, but a moment everlasting.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy York and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Deputy York has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy York, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Deputy York is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I think about you and your fiance often. I hope you both know how many people care and will never forget about you. Thank you for all you did to protect us and make our lives safer while you were here on earth. You will live in my heart forever. Even though I didn't know you, I felt so much pain when you were taken away. There is still pain inside of me for what happened to you, but I know you are at peace and with the Lord. Rest in peace, and my prayers are always with your family and Jennifer.

To the family and loved ones of Deputy Sheriff Shayne Danie York and his fellow officers with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department:

On this the ninth anniversary of Shayne's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. Shayne's professionalism and dedication will never be forgotten, and his memory will always be revered for his courage and valor. The circumstances of his death were horrific, and I am so glad that he and his family got the full measure of justice they deserved for this despicable crime.

In reading the loving reflections left by his friends and co-workers I can see that he was very well respected and is sorely missed.

I hope that God is holding him in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.

I am so sorry that Shayne was robbed of his life so tragically, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Shayne gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 16, 1997.

Still remembered...

August 16, 2006

I can still remember that night, as if it was today. I was off-duty with another LAPD cop, and we noticed that every 91 Freeway offramp was covered by LA/OC County cops. I mention you and your fiancee in my off-duty tactics classes, on a regular basis, and your memory lives on ! RIP, Bro
