Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Brian E. Meilbeck

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 12th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Rest In Peace

To Brian's son: I hope to meet you one day at a COPS function. You and your family are in my heart's embrace today. I am sure your Dad is very proud of you.

Someone killed a policeman today and
A part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long lonely nights,
The beat that he walked was a battlefield too,
Just as if he had gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yep, somebody killed a policeman today
In your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on the dark city street
And he stands at each rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all
And a part of America died.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Ten years have passed since your EOW and time has
not diminished your sacrifice. We are sad for how your life ended, but not for the choices you made. Well done, good and faithful servant. I long to be where you
are some day. Tell Jesus HI.

My dearest Brian,
It seems like yesterday that I saw your amazing smile and was laughing at your goofy jokes. Already 9 years have past and it seems I miss you more today than yesterday. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and wish I was still hearing your voice. You will always be in our hearts and one day soon we will meet again.

To Deputy Brian Meilbeck and his loved ones:

On this the ninth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.
Reading the loving reflections about your beloved Brian gives us some understanding of what a kind and honorable young man he was. To have been killed with seven weeks on the job seems even more cruel.

Brian, in your short tenure you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Deputy Meilbeck. I am humbled by your valor, courage, and dedication. I am so sorry your life was taken from you at such a young age when you had a lifetime ahead of you. How your loved ones must miss you.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Brian gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on April 1, 1997.

This is truly sad. I have a 2 year old
grandson who is crazy about his Dad and Grandpa. Hard to imagine the pain of your not being there for your wife and son. He would be 11 now.
If You knew Jesus personally, then you are supremely happy and those left behind are the only ones who are miserable. This is NOT our home and we look forward to meeting you when Jesus calls His faithful to Himself. God bless.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Tonight, April 1, 2006 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Deputy Sheriff Brian E. Meilbeck who died in the line of duty on this date nine years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Deputy Meilbeck's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The only thing about your death is the fact that you are in HEAVEN with your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. True, you are missed every day, but there is nothing like the comfort of knowing that we will meet again in a place where there is only mercy, fairness, perfection.  Only there will we truly realize true love and the meaning of our existances.  I can't wait to see your smiling (or should I say smirking :)) face again.  You will never be forgotten as long a God allows me to take breath.

This is a special thank you to all law inforcement officers who put their lives in the line of duty to protect me, my family, my loved ones, and those who need to be protected from themselves.
