Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Gregory Hans

Greg, you were on my mind today. Honestly, you cross my thoughts often. I think about how you, Tony, and I met at the McDonald’s at 28th and Broadway. A short time later you were gone. You’ve not been forgotten.

The criminal that did this could take your life. But they can't take away the man you are. A man of such dedication and courage and integrity. You were and are always a hero. Thank you sir. You will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.

I was working that day in another part of the county. Greg and I were assigned to serve papers. He was a good man and a great co worker. I met the ambulance at the hospital where he eventually passed away. RIP Deputy Hans.

You were so brave to go out there in the line of duty and risk everything you have to keep the people of that town safe. I only wish I could've gotten to meet you. My father talks about you.... You seemed like such a great person in general and I am honored to be on your bloodline. You are not forgotten.

Greg,
I can't believe that its been 15 years... I still remember the day I got called into my headquarters at the Georgetown Police for an urgent call from Louisville. Vickie Brown was on the phone and gave me the terrible news.. I somehow finished my shift and drove to Louisville to be at the FOP memorial service.. When it came time to say goodbye I was standing with the many others who could not fit in the chapel.. Just wanted to let you know that you are not forgotten.. I saw David not long ago and he helped me with a case.. You would be very proud of him, as I am sure you are...RIP my Brother....

What a terrible thing, to have missed so much in the lives of your loved ones.

Harriet Beecher Stowe once said, "The bitterest of tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone." So many special days were missed and all because of an individual who should not even be walking this earth. Continue to watch over your loved ones, you are a true hero and will never be forgotten.

Dad,
It's been thirteen years today since you were taken from us. You would not believe how much has changed in our lives. You have two wonderful grandsons who are smart and athletic, as I am sure you have seen from beyond. They keep us very busy, especially during the summer. We try to tell them as much as we can about you, and they sometimes ask us questions about what happened. We don't sugarcoat it anymore.
Not a day goes by that I do not think about you and what life would be like if you were still here. I am still amazed that so many people remember you and always have a kind word to say. You truly touched many lives while living, and I have tried to cherish every experience because, as was shown to us, life is fleeting. I have to admit that my whole outlook on people in general has gradually plummeted in the last thirteen years, but I bet if you were here, you would just laugh at my attitude and point out all the positives. Maybe that is what I can do starting today. Focus on the positive!
Watch over us out there!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I recall attending your funeral services. It seems like just yesterday I was listening to your children read that hear wrenching letter they had prepared for you. There was not a dry eye in the small attached building they had to put us in because there were too many of us to fit into the chapel. To this day I cannot remember a more touching police memorial service. Take care and I'll see you on the other side.

Rest in peace, Deputy Hans. I am happy to see that justice will be served...and the person responsible for your death will pay w/ his own life. It can't bring you back...and it can't make the pain go away...but it can bring about some closure for your family and friends.

You were taken out of this world much too soon. May God bless you and keep you...always.
