Reflections for Officer Don Joseph Burt

Dear Don: I never got to meet you, but Kristin has told me how much she loves and misses you. I know your death was a long time ago, but I appreciate the sacrifice you gave for others. Kristin is my first cousin and we haven't met yet but we talk on the phone. Hopefully I will meet Kristin and the boys soon. I want to hear more good things about you! May GOD bless your family! Rest in peace Don!

Hey Hon...it's been a while. Life has thrown a lot at me while you have been resting. I think you would be proud of how I have handled it all though. I remind myself every day how lucky I am to have been loved by you, and I use that memory as my strength. I know that you would approve of the man in my life now....he loves me the way you did, and respects your memory with me. It's hard to imagine what you would be like now (53! Yikes!) but I'm sure you would still be as handsome as ever. Love you and miss you eternally ❤️

Just a citizen driving thru and saw road sign, so I looked up his name. Truly a tragedy. He would have been 51 now?

I saw your name post up on social media today. Your son is full grown! I thought I'd put you on my heroes wall. I remember when this call went out. I dropped a Bible off with some of my favorite verses written in it (Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God). I'm glad your family got it. Rest in peace brother!

To everyone who leaves reflections: I cannot tell you how much it means to me to have this page to visit every now and then. Thank you for all the wonderful words of encouragement and remembrance. I read them all and cherish them every day. We're almost at the 21 year mark (that's just crazy), and each new remembrance still means so much. Thank you again to everyone!

I happened to see the memorial plaque in your honor when I was taking classes at Cal State Fullerton. This was in 1999 so some years after you were so tragically and horrifically taken from your family and friends, just while doing your job. I remember being very shaken, just knowing what had taken place at that very spot. I went inside to talk to the cashier at Coco's and talked to her for a few minutes. She didn't know much, but we talked about it for a few minutes. I was so very saddened for you and your family, and keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

I still drive by the location now and then and always remember officer Burt. I wish there was something more permenant there so that when people walk by they would know that a good man stood up to evil that day and set into motion a chain of events that led to the apprehention of this thug.

Being a resident of Orange County, CA and a fellow law enforcement brother you will not be forgotten. Seeing your son, whom you never got the chance to meet, graduate from high school is an impressive accomplishment. May you never be forgotten.

I drove past the gas station just a few minutes after you were taken from us. I had no idea anyhing was going on until after I saw police cars from every agency in the area (Brea, Fullerton, Placentia, Anaheim, La Habra Cal State Fullerton PD and CHP) rolling past me Code-3. I saw two helicopters overhead. I made a u-turn and discovered what had happened. I will never forget that night and what you did for the citizens of our community. Your son, not ever meeting you will however always know that you were a hero. You will always be remembered and you will reunite wih your family in Heaven one day. You are remembered and missed. We will meet some time again. God bless you.
