I met Duane while working in USDOC Export Enforcement: he interviewed me for an upgraded security clearance when I applied for transfer to the Foreign Commercial Service (1991). Later when Secretary Brown visited China (about 1993), where I was posted, Duane and I met again, and he presented me with one of the lapel pins worn by all USDOC special agents on protection detail. I still have that pin, which occupies a special place in my household. Meeting a genuine public servant like Duane was a privilege.

Duane,

There isn't a single day that I don't think of you. Your picture sits on my desk as a reminder of our time together in OSY. I learned so much from you and those lessons have assited me in my career. I am a much better person and leader because of you. When a situation arises, I look at your picture and try to think how you would handle the situation. So many of my subordinate officers have received a second chance because you gave some of us that second chance.

Thank you

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Christian Family. I've tried to contact Mrs. Shelia Christian since I heard the news in 1996. Something told me to search your names today, 8/31/09. I still have the returned letters I sent to Mrs. Christian through the White House. I taught Andre at Patuxent Elementary School, and it was indeed a pleasure to work with such dedicated parents as Duane and Shelia. Mark had just been born when my husband, Thaddeus, and I moved to Hampton. I pray for your continued strength. SMSutton

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Well it has taken me long enough. Not a day goes by that I don't reflect and remember how special my uncle was and still is in my life. He was more of a brother to me and I miss him more each day. I find myself saying or doing things that remind me of and him it's as if he is still here with me. I try to live my life and love my family just as he lived and loved his family. Uncle Duane was alot of things to many people but his legacy to me is that no matter how or where he touched you in your life you always left knowing you just spent time with one of God's angels on earth.Unlce Duane I will love you always..

Uncle Wayne,

It felt like yesterday when me and you went to the same doctor's office. You would always say " I seen you sitting by the window", and I would say how did you know? To this day I still haven't figured it out. In my head I would say how did he know where I was sitting if he wasn't there. Well I am doing much better now. My allergies only act up every once in a while, but no more allergy shots. I miss you so much and I love you with all my heart. Until we meet again. Rest In Peace.

I recently found this web site dedicated to hero's like you who have made the ultimate sacrifice. There is not a day that goes by that I don't remember you and reflect on what you meant to so many individuals. Just today, a man approached me to ask me if I were your brother. He went on to tell me what a difference you had made in his life as his baseball coach and over the years he was not the first to inquire. I am proud to be your brother. We all love you and miss you. As long as I am able your legacy will be alive. I know you are looking over all of us. With eternal love and affection....rest in peace.
