Reflections for Police Officer Kevin J. Gillespie

I served as the jury foreman in the case of the murder of Officer Gillespi. I often wonder how his wife and children are doing. It has been 10 years and yet I remember the case as if it was yesterday. I wanted to let his family know that he will forever be in my prayers as will you. May god bless you all. His spirit "OWNS THE NIGHT".

We can't believe it's been ten years since you were so tragically taken from your family and friends. Rest in peace, knowing that they are well, while you watch over all of us from Heaven.

To Officer Kevin Gillespie and his loved ones:

On this the tenth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.

Officer Gillespie, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

You also served your counry as a Marine. My beloved son Larry Lasater was fatally shot on April 23, 2005. He too was your brother in green as well as in blue.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Officer Gillespie. Semper Fi.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Kevin gave to his community and the citizens of New York, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 14, 1996.

I NEVER DREAMED IT WOULD BE ME

I never dreamed it would be me,
My name for all eternity,
Recorded here at this hallowed place,
Alas, my name, no more my face.

"In the line of duty," I hear them say:
My family now the price to pay.
My folded flag stained with tears;
We only had those few short years.

The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest.
My sword I pass to those behind,
And pray they keep this thought in mind.

I never dreamed it would be me,
And with heavy heart and bended knee,
I ask for all here from the past:
Dear God, let my name be the last.

REST IN PEACE BRO!

I had the great honor and pleasure to have worked with Kevin on the midnight shift at PSA 2 and we had many good times. There was never anything that he wouldn't do for you. I never met a more dedicated cop who loved his job as much as he did. His famous catch phrase at the end of every roll call, before we went out into the street was "BE SAFE". We lost a great friend and true hero and may he rest in peace eternally. He will never be forgotten and it is an honor to have known him and worked side by side together. He is sorely missed and always in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

My memories of Kevin have nothing to do with being a great police officer. I knew him long before he went on the job. For me, he was just a great friend. We talked every day. We still do (I still talk and he still listens). I miss him as much today as I have for the past nine years. There is no greater gift God can give us than the unconditional love of a friend like Kevin. I am fortunte enough to see his family often and watch his boys grow.
Till we meet again buddy....

I didn't know Kevin. I just knew of him. He was the first officer that got killed in the line of duty since I came on the job. I worked in the 75, so I know a lot of guys from PSA 2 that knew him well. The guys in PSA 2 had nothing but great things to say about him. He became my first hero since I came on. We will never forget him.

Kevin and I graduated together and came to MTU together, which turned out of PSA 2 and I remember he left early to go to midnights in PSA 2 to take care of his family. I remember that he was a good man, who loved his family and cared for others. Kevin you are still missed.

When an Officer is taken from his friends and family, the newspapers in the NYC area have many articles that describe the person and sometimes it sounds too good to be true. With Kevin, it was all true. A Gentleman, A good Father and husband. A good cop. He was no kid when he joined the Department, he was a Marine, a man of strong character who worked hard. He was kind, humble, trustworthy, loyal, disciplined and displayed integrity. He loved being a cop. He loved PSA # 2 and his close friends on the 12x8's, especially B-dog, a great cop,who took Kevin under his wing. I never heard Kevin say a bad thing about anyone, he was not that type of guy. Just the other night myself and some other PSA # 2 alumni were together and talking about Kevin. To his family....if it helps, HE IS NOT FORGOTTEN. He left an imprint on those who knew him. He had that rare quality. When people ask about him, what he was like, I usually tell them that he was really good cop and an even better man. Respectfully submitted. JC Housing 4101

I worked with Kevin during the mid-night shift in Brooklyn North (PSA#2) for his 3 1/2 yrs before he joined the elite street crime unit of which he loved. Kevin was loving called by his colleagues as "Dizzy". It has been 11yrs since his passing and not a day goes by were his name is not mentioned lovingly. He was a dedicated cop,a real friend and a true hero. In his home town he was also known affectionately as the "Mayor" . God has gained a Great Cop to watch over us down here. Rest in peace Brother.
