Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Captain Thomas Mitchell Williamson

Today is the 33rd anniversary of your death and our son is now 36 years old and oh how proud you would be of him and the man he has become. He is so much like you. I am constantly amazed by the reflection of you in him, even the things that he says and how it sounds like it's coming from you. He takes pride in the fact that he has done what both of his parents have done during their career in law enforcement. He started out as a Patrol Officer and later became a Criminal Investigator and worked with narcotics as uniformed interdiction Officer before becoming a Deputy Sheriff. He is now an instructor with the Police Academy and a very good one so I am told by some of his cadets. In fact, he just texted me to remind me that today was the 33rd anniversary of your death. This month is also my 40th anniversary with the Sheriff's Office as and I still have another year and a half before I reach my full retirement age. We have been through so many struggles but have managed to survive them all by the Grace of God including the Covid Pandemic. We have never stopped loving you, missing you or forgotten you and have attended in person or in spirit 32 years of the Peace Officers Memorial Service to pay honor and tribute to you and your unselfish service and ultimate sacrifice. I asked for prayers today in remembrance of you for our son.

You have been on my mind so much today. Five officers lost their lives in Texas last week. There was a service for them today. The feelings of anguish returned today with the memories of how hurt I was when you were killed. I have prayed for them to depend on God for the strength to get through this. They will never be the same but through him they will find their way. I LOVE you so very much.

Your youngest son is now 29 years old, and although it will be the 26th anniversary of your death this November 16th, it seems like only yesterday that our lives were changed forever as time seemed to stand still. As I reflect back through the years and watched our son grow up to become the man that he is now, I can't tell you how many tears we've shed or how many times I told him how much his Daddy loved him and would be so very proud of him. He is so much like you in so many ways...and has followed in your footsteps, the same as your baby brother and nephew, only he is smarter and a better marksman than both of us. You would be so proud of the man he is today just as I am. You would also be honored and humbled to know that your name IS now engraved in stone on both the State and Federal Peace Officers' Memorial Walls, as well as your slab and you will be remembered forever more.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

This is my father, he was a great man and he did what he loved doing and that was helping someone in need. From what I'm told by criminals that I come in contact with on a daily basis, that I'm lucky to have had a dad like Tommy. These same criminals who my dad put away in prison years before I came to this earth, with a tear in their eyes want to shake my hand and give me a hug... Now You tell me that he didnt have an impact on peoples lives. Now I am a Police Officer and I have HUGE shoes to fill, but Im going to do my very best! My dad is without a doubt my hero. When Capt. Tommy Williamson said something, you could engrave it in stone, because it was going to happen.
I cant recall the Bible verse but it says "Greater love hath man that he lay done his life for another." That sir I am proud to say was my father! I love you dad! Ptrl. Thomas Stewart Williamson

You are missed so very much. I wish you could have met your granddaughter; but I will make sure she always know how special you were, how proud I am to be your daughter, and how lucky she should feel to have such an amazing granddaddy who made the ultimate sacrifice to help keep her world a safer place. I love you Daddy!

Rest in Peace, Brother. Your service and dedication will never be forgotten. We are grateful for all of you who wore the badge before us and did so with honor, integrity and pride.

Through your sacrifice, you were called Home for an eternal position under the greatest Commander of all. Continue to watch over your family and all of those you left behind. Keep them safe and let them find strength in knowing that you are still helping people, those you protect and those who are still being impacted by reading of your sacrifice.
