Somebody killed a police officer today...

Somebody killed a police officer today

and a part of America died,

a piece of our country he swore to protect

will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,

with counsel demanding his right,

while a young widow must work for their kids

and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,

Just as if he'd gone off to war.

Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,

to the case at 11th and State they will add his worn star.

Yes, somebody killed a police officer today.

It happened in your city or mine.

While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,

a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,

and he stands at each recruit's side.

He answered the call, and gave us his all

and a part of America died...

No longer will he tramp his beat,
His Captain called him home.
Through winter storms and wintry days
He often had to roam;
But now he rests in silent peace,
He has no cross to bear,
His home is far beyond the skies
In sacred lands and fair.
He walks no more where danger lurks
For he's at peace with God
And through eternity shall sleep
Beneath the sweet green sod.

33 years has passed and you have not been forgotten by those that love you nor has the Blue Family forgotten. Keep looking down on your family. Next time I visit Police Headquaters I will make it a point to stop at your star in the Honor Case to pay tribute to you as you are a true hero.

There was a wonderful three day program in the City of Chicago to honor all the police people who lost their lives protecting us. I was so happy to see that you were honored with a plaque , because the Leadership of Greater Chicago donated the money for it . It was a beautiful tribute to all police officers living or gone.. You would be very proud. I also know you were looking down on Dan, Darc, Bobby Dave and Me Rose being so proud of you. Thank you for all you have done for us. We really really miss you and know what are lives woud be like if that day never happened. We love You , Rose, Dave Dan Darcy. Bobby
