Reflections for Detective John Robert Weiss

John and I were good friends and rode identical motorcycles(Honda 900 customs) at the time! I remember him and I rode them to Six Flags in St. Louis for a few days. Both of us had worked the night shift and ended up falling asleep in the grass for a couple of hours at a rest area half way to St. louis that morning! I use to work of duty at the Trubadour and John would always come and hang out and talk "police work" as he wanted to learn all he could--- and I would say--- John forget that--- check out these girls! I was a State Parole Officer, and a St. Regis Park Police Officer, and John was a Douglas Hills officer before going to Shively! I will always remember the night of February 12, 1986, when the call came out on the radio of an officer down! RIP my friend!

You were more than my brothers best friend, you were my brother. I miss when you would show up at T-ball practice with my brother when he was our coach, I can still hear you say " Hustle Hustle Hustle" . You and my brother working at Bo's Disco and me trying to figure out who was actually the number one DJ. So much we have lost out on. Marriage, nieces and nephew's. Mine, my sister and my brothers kids not knowing how awesome of an uncle they would have had. The pain is still there as it was the night you were shot.. you are always on my mind.. you will never be forgotten

I worked with John for a time at a health spa on Dupont Circle. I think it was called 21st Century Health Spa. John was so friendly and helpful there. He seemed to know every member...and every member seemed to know him. He’d often talk about becoming a police officer one day, as he knew my father was an officer with Jefferson Counties Charlie district. So full of life...you are sorely missed John.

John was my friend in high school. He was a great guy with much to give and that made a lasting impression on me. We lost track of each other when I moved away and it wasn't until I heard of his tragic end that I realized I missed out on time that I could never regain. I think about him to this day, especially when I hear in the news of other brave protectors who have given all. Thank you for your ultimate service.

John I meet you on September of 1982 at our police training class. You were full of many wonderful talent and you were on you way to successful future in everyway imaginable. You represented yourself in a way that many would follow, you were leader and a wonderful human being.......... I was there with you at the end when you pass on. I want to thank you for all you have done in your life and for treating me with respect like no other has. I will never forget. Until we meet again and we will, Sincerly Eddie.

I knew John at the University of Louisville, where we were students. John was one of the kindest individuals I ever knew. He would go out of his way to help so many others. His major life goal was to be a police officer, and yet he was killed in that role while he was in his 20s. I know he is resting in peace, alongside his biggest supporter: his mom.

John and I worked together in the Louisville, Ky. area, shared our police work stories, he would hang around nights with me in a night club where I worked off duty (to share a drink or 2 and check out the ladies- LOL), and the summer before he was murdered John and I rode our motorcycles(we had identical 900CB Hondas) to St. Louis where we camped out, played at Six Flags like we were still kids, ate at the Old Spaghetti Factory, etc. I was working that snowy cold night when the call came out over the police radio. Still thinking about you Brother John after all these years!

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 26th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never dimishes respect and your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace.

This site is meant to memorilize our fallen officers. It is not meant as a site for any lectures or hopes for forgiveness for the killer or to list what some see as his prison accomplishement. I feel no compunction or desire to forgive the murderers of my son. I have always said that they don't have to answer to me but to God and the same rational applies to forgiveness.

Rest In Peace

I was working the night this fine officer was killed. The lady said it is time to forgive. I hold no hate in my heart. I hope she holds no hate towards me when I say society is owed forty five more years. And I ask when this man comes up for parole that there is always someone there to speak for the dead. His only crime was being a police officer.
He was shot for no reason except Robbery. The debt is far from being paid.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

65 years for the killer? Detective Weiss didn't have that option. The killer should be put to death so he could look up from hell and see Detective Weiss in heaven with God.

John, what tragic loss that day. I get angry reading about Jerry Guenthner and how "well" he is doing in prison.

john was my cousin. as i think about the years we never had together, I consider the plea of his killer. since he took john from us, he has given away the right to any joy or comfort. I will miss john forever. I hope his killer misses his freedom forever.

I worked with John at the University of Louisville Department of Public Safety and the Douglass Hills Police Department: He was a smart, gung-ho young officer who was taken from us much too soon. Even afer 20 years and having known other officers killed in the line of duty, I find myself thinking of John often....
