Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Dennis Frank Webb

Dennis, I knew you through a mutual close friend and co-worker. We both started our careers at about the same time and if you look at a photograph of me in 1980, we even looked alot alike. When you were murdered it struck home for me and I attended your funeral along with our mutual friend and several thousand brothers and sisters. For the first time I faced the likelihood of my own mortality and the truth that this could happen to me.

How you lived your life and your funeral moved me deeply to re-examine my own life and I have never forgotten you. My career choices lead to my leaving the Department before I retired in 1992. But I have stayed connected in one way or another. Today and for the past 6 years, I teach young and experienced police officers a variety of subjects and hopefully haved passed on knowledge and experience that will serve to keep them alive to the day they can retire.

Dennis, you live on through me and all of us in Law Enforcement and you will not be forgotten! God bless you for your service and a career that may have been short but had meaning and purpose.

On the 28th anniversary of Officer Webb's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Officer Webb is not forgotten.

You're still missed in this household and thought of often. Remembering those days spent on horseback, riding through the foothills always makes me smile. Your generosity toward my daughter and your support of her through difficult times is much appreciated. Her time spent on patrol with you is a stellar memory.

I've long wondered how you knew you would die young. I only wish the responsible teen could have known the fine man you are. Even in those last few moments, you stayed true to your honor as a police officer and treated him fairly.

I'm still in touch with our mutual friends. They miss you too. We're all proud to have known you.

May you find peace.

I met you before you were taken away. I loved you as I know you loved me we spent so many special days and times together. So many years and every year today I miss you so much and remember the plans we made together and remember what we could have had. But you came into my dream the next night you were taken away and told me everything would be ok and that you would see me soon. You let me go ahead with my life and raise 3 children with the love you gave me and made sure I met someone who could fullfil your dreams and raise the children we would have had together. I was there in the hospital helping you with your last breaths and when you took your last breath and when you looked in my eyes I knew you loved me and what we have planned and talked about was real though at the end I had to pretend though those around us knew the truth and that it real. After 27 years I can no longer pretend. I miss you every year at this time and these moment.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Brother Dennis,

Thank you for your service to our great nation and your community. You are a true warrior, for a warrior does not know how to leave it up to other to carry out the fight against evil. You could not let other fight for our freedom, nor could you let others fight for our safety. You define HERO and WARRIOR... For that I am humbled and grateful.

God Speed Brother....
