Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Policeman Roger Renick Warren, Jr.

I served with "Rick", at Manzano AFB in 1966-67. He was a good friend, and one of the nicest guys I've ever met. When word came that Rick had been killed, everyone at Manzano Base was shocked, and saddend. He left behind a beautiful wife, a young daughter, along with a ton of friends at Manzano Base. He was a first class AP, and loved by all who knew him. I miss you Rick, and I will never forget the good times we had together. Rest in peace my friend.

Roger,

I was a student at Van Nuys Jr High when I learned about your death. From what I recall, a couple of students were talking about the suspect who I believe attended my school at the time. Your death affected me deeply since it happened at Vanowen Park which is a park were I regularly played. I could not understand then the cruelty that exists in some people. Your are a hero and I though of you often during my first days on the streets of Los Angeles. Your death and your memory were instrumental in my choice to join the ranks of the LAPD. R.I.P. my brother.

Thank you for your service. Very sad to read the circumstances of your death. It appears that you had many friends and many of whom spoke of you fondly. May you continue to protect us from above and keep us all safe. Rest in peace.

Although you made the ultimate sacrifice many years before I was born, your story touched my heart as I will be hitting the streets for the first time in a few short months.

I sat next to Roger in the academy and knew him better than anyone else in our class. Roger was killed less than two weeks after our graduation. That day changed my life, I realized just how fragile life could be. I will never forget you my friend

Roger it has been 41 years since that tragic night, I wish I could have did something to help you. I think about it often. You should have never died on streets you loved.

The murder of PM Warren is certainly not forgotten. Here at the LAPD, we pride ourselves on scrutinizing every assault upon an officer, in hopes of developing better tactics to prevent such occurrences in the future.

In spite of our efforts a situation as what occurred on May 08, 1967, with no prior indication that a sniper lying-in-wait, is present, is one of those situations which even the greatest tactical minds, would be hard - pressed to devlop tactics that would minimize the danger.

PM Warren, May Your Soul Rest - In - Peace.

Roger and I were classmates at the LAPD Academy, we were sworn in on 1/67, and we hit the streets in April with only three months of training under our belts. As I recall Roger was one of the good guys in our class; he was quiet and low-key, but he always finished the runs and he kept up with whatever we had to do. We were only out of the Academy a few weeks when he was shot while on patrol in the San Fernando Valley, and to this day I can still recall the shock I felt upon hearing hearing how he -- one of my classmates -- died. Back in those days the world was a different place, and so much of what we saw and did can not be talked about today, but I will always feel that Roger was a buddy who got a bad break by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. RIP, old friend, I did my best to uphold the honor of our class, and you will always be in my thoughts.

I have never fogotten you, Nancy or Kelly or that terrible night when I came to your home with our captain. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my entire career. Rick you stood with me in the academy and you were with me in my heart for 23 years. At roll call that night you promised to teach Tuggy and me how to play golf at EOW. Well when I complete my last shift I hope you and I can finaly keep that promise. God Bless You
