Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant Robert D. Ward

Sgt. Ward was a groomsman in our dad's wedding. My sisters and I are looking at our parents' wedding album, which prompted us to remember our dad talking about his friend, and what a good guy he was. You have not been forgotten.

Sgt. Ward:

Sir: I had the pleasure yesterday (6/12/19) to meet your son and grandson. Both followed in your footsteps with the Seattle PD. Your Son is retired and your grandson is a Motor Sgt. and runs the SPD M/C Drill Team. It was such an honor meeting them. They both carry on "in your honor." RIP Sir! You did a great job and are a true hero.

I will never forget being awakened that morning of May 15, 1969. I was a young boy of 8 years and was told that my father, Officer Paul J Greiner was in a terrible accident while on duty, but I can't imagine the shock in your household when your family heard the news.
His injuries were severe, and his partner, Officer Gary Pankey was riding in the back seat and sustained lesser injuries.
I never pursued a career in law enforcement my grandfather, L.K. Greiner was a captain at the now defunct Georgetown Precinct, and my father ended up retiring from SPD at a young age a few years later as a result of that accident. I took a different path.He passed away at a young age in 1997, and Officer Gary Pankey passed away a few years ago.
My father was never the same after that day, and we all felt the effects of that day for years to come.
Sargeant Ward, you are a true hero, and left a legacy you would surely be proud of.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
