I can't believe I just found this site. Louis John Vasgar was my father, Frank C Shaw's brother. Lou had one brother and two sisters. Lou was the youngest sibling. My father and his sisters father, Franklin Shaw died when he was 37. Estella Shaw, my grandmother remarried and gave birth to Louis J Vasgar. His father also died at a young age. My father was around 14 and was then the sole provider for his family. Fast forward, both dad and brother were into cars. In fact we are all still in the car repair business today. I am the manager for technical training at Hyundai Motor America. I know Lou and Anthony have a successful repair shop too. To this day I am not sure why Aunt Janice distanced herself and my cousins from us. The loss of my uncle was tough enough for us, only to lose my grandmother 6 weeks later. FYI...My father passed suddenly on September 25, 2014.

J lived next door to Lou & his family on Granite St in Philadelphia. I played with his oldest son all the time & i remember his wife Janice. Her & my mom were good friends. I just remember my mom getting dressed to go to the funeral & how sad she was. I would love to hear from any of the Vasgar family, to just catch up & say hi.

Yes, My name is Michael James Vasger. My father, "Charles Vasger", was Louis Vasger's cousin. I do remember when my father was leaving the house to go to Lou's funeral. I had asked my Mother, "Janice (Clouden) Vasger", where my Father was going that night. My mother then told me the story, and these exact words: Daddy's cousin was a Philadelphia Police officer, He was killed when he tryied to stop a robbery"! So when i saw that there were more "Name sake's", I was thankful that i, myself, was'nt the last to carry the "Vasger Name" !! I would l9ike nothing more than to get to know this part of My family !

I was at Kane's Bar w/a date the night Officer Vasger was killed. It is a moment I will never forget. They have a plaque I am told that marks the spot. I want to visit and say a prayer to find some closure. I am sure his sons are in their forties now and hope they continue to honor his life

I am glad I got the chance to do this

Too many years have passed since the day my Father & Mother told me what happen to Lou. I was 14 at the time. At that time it was the sadest day of my life. Lou, his Wife and 3 kids would come up state with us to our mountain retreat and have a GREAT time. Lou was one of the greatest guys I knew, and to this day I always think of him. The last 1 1/2 that the other offices from the 35th where killed just kept bringing back all the memories I have of him.
Lou, I will never forget you...

POLICE OFFICER
PHILA PA

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
