Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Patrolman Charles E. Attig, Jr.

On this 25th anniversary of Charlie's murder, May God Grant his Family, Fellow Officers, and Friends, the Serenity to accept the things they can not change, the Courage to change the things they can, and the Wisdom to know the difference. We will never forget his sacrifice and our prayers and thoughts are of all you today...For those who pledge to uphold it Freedom requires a sacrifice, the protected will never know....

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

You left us at the hands of coward who did not have the courage to face you one on one, but rather sneak up on you and open fire when you were least expecting it. You are a true hero and will always be remembered as such. Rest in peace my friend.

I sat with Charlie in class at Harrisburg Area Community College in 1980 and said he will make a good cop some day! Again I met Charlie in the Pa. State Police Academy. He did make a good cop! My prediction was right on. He was loved by all. I too remember passing the "strip" and seeing all the tributes on the buisness signs after he was gunned down. I passed him on duty on my way to Scranton to announce my engagement and wanted to stop and give him the news! I was in a hurry so I passed without stopping. Little did I know that two nights later he would die. As I wind down my career after over 27 years I often think of my academy members Charlie and John who are both gone. I think of Jimmie and Dave from my department who are also gone. RIP Brothers and sisters.

Twenty years has passed since this horrible crime, but I can still vividly remember the outpouring of love and support from the communities all along the 11 & 15 corridor. You see, I was just beginning this venture of service to the law enforcement community in 1983.

My reason for traveling through Shamokin Dam was to attend the United Methodist Conference session at Bloomsburg University, where I began ministerial service through being Ordained a Deacon on June 13 of that year. I commuted to BSU and passed "the strip" several times, and all of those signs, and the remembrance of Officer Attig was very much on my mind when I knelt before a large cross fashioned from straw on the stage of the campus auditorium. The first Deacon of the Church was St. Stephen, who lay down his life for others, and I was mindful that Officer Attig had walked that same path, a path that I was now called to follow.

Rest in peace, comrade, rest in peace.

Our family would like to thank everyone for what they have done over the past several years. The memories of him will remain in the hearts of everyone that knew him. I know that he will never be forgotten.

i was there with Charlie the night that he was murdered. The sight of that still to this day haunts me. Charlie was a good friend indeed and led me to the path of becoming a police officer. We all miss you Charlie :)

Charlie was an officer that was cut down before he reached his prime. He had the ability to arrest persons and then have them say "thank you" when it was complete. Not many officers could do that.

He is missed my me and my wife. (he was the Best man at our wedding). We think of you always.
