My Grandfather, Erwin Edgar Tate, was a loving husband and father, and a 4th year police officer. On that fateful day of April 10, 1939, he and his police partner were sent to serve a warrant for arrest. When they arrived, Grandpa was shot by a gun in the hands of the suspect. An all-points bulletin was put out that officer Tate was down and offender was on the run. A number of officers responded to the APB. When they found him two blocks away hiding under a truck, he began to fire at the officers. They returned fire and killed him. My grieving Grandmother, Jessie L. Tate felt sad for the offender also. "He had a family too" she said. Eventually, Grandma moved to San Diego to be close to her children. She lived to be 102 years old.

Lord-Thank You. I remember Dad going to work at 7:30 p.m. At about 8:15, he had been shot. I was with Momma getting my brother Jimmy ready for bed. Soon, we heard voices from outside. Momma asked me why they were out there. I told her I didn't know. Then, Momma's doctor came to tell her what happened. When she saw him, she said "Erv is dead, isn't he"? He said "Yes". My favorite memory of my Mom and Dad are while waiting for the bus to arrive, they would sit in the swings and talk. We kids would run and play in the yard-happy and oblivious to what was going to happen. My advice to people is to love your parents and your children...kiss them and tell them that you love them. It could be your last chance.

This was my grandfather. I never had a chance to meet him. He was killed in April 39, my father was born in Sept. of 38. My father never knew his father, which in turn I believe affected our relationship. When an officer is killed, it not only effects his or her immediate family, but it also effects the fallowing generations. I thank God that my grandfather's memory has not been forgotten. I pray for all those who have lost loved ones on the force.

You walked the streets of Zanesville, serving proudly long before I was born. I never met you in person, but I see your photo hanging on the wall in the station, and learned about you through faded newspaper clippings carefully stored away at the local newspaper. You haven't been forgotten. Men and women have taken up the battle where you left off and are still proudly serving Zanesville.
