Reflections for Police Officer Cheryl W. Seiden

For fellow historians:
On April 8, 2004, Gov. Jeb Bush signed the "Officer Cheryl Seiden Act" into law making it illegal for State Prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that would prohibit law enforcement officers from testifying at a parole hearings. The legislation also prohibits plea agreements that preclude a law enforcement officer who's a victim of an offense, or an authorized representative of the officer's employing agency, from appearing or providing a statement at the sentencing hearing.

Officer Seiden:

You are most certainly not forgotten.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

As tomorrow marks the silver anniversary of your loss to us I reflect back to our early days as Bill put it,"with a smile on your face". You were always upbeat. We all had the attitude to make Dade a better place as we worked. Hopefully we did.
Knowing that you continue to look over us and protect us from above helps us in the tough times. We are all better having worked with you and had you as a friend. Thanks

Dearest Cheryl,
I still think of you often along with others we've shared time with. You were so much fun to be around while we attended the police academy as PSO's in (1975). I was thrilled that you were assigned to JMH along with me, instead of the airport. Seeing your photo here brings me right back to that moment in time. And, I really appreciated seeing you and June R. at my wedding too. You were a good friend. The thing I remember most is your compassion. You were all about helping people, and what a perfect place JMH was for you. Your crazy antics made me laugh so many times, and I can still see you cutting-up and acting silly out in front of the ER where we were often assigned. Thanks so much for the great memories...
I was devasted to learn of the shooting that ultimately took your life; but saw you on TV with a smile on your face, even after being shot. I just knew you were going to be alright. But, it was not to be, in the end. Your Mom was devastated, as were the rest of us. Your memory has served as an inspiration to me, that we need to make the best out of life while we can, and never let adversity get us down. Thank you so much for being my friend. I will never forget you. Rest in peace Sweet Lady.
