Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Military Police Officer Derek Matthew Schultz

Sharp as a tack, a hard worker, tons of pride, Derrick knew how to make the tough times in basic training bearable, which made life better for all of us.

It was an honor to have trained with him.

Though I knew him for only a brief period, he will always be remembered.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

DERRICK,

IT HAS BEEN 20 YEARS SINCE YOUR DEATH. MANY TIMES I HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT DAY. HOLDING YOUR HAND AND TELLING YOU THINGS WERE GOING TO BE OKAY......WONDERING WHY YOUR LIFE WAS CUT SO SHORT.

I CAN SEE THE SCENE TODAY IN MY MIND LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY...DRIVING ALONG THE SIDEWALKS TO GET THROUGH THE "TOURIST" TRAFFIC.

WHEN I REFLECT ON THE PAST TWENTY YEARS OF MY LIFE...IT OFTEN TIMES LETS ME APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS THAT YOU HAD NOT HAD THE CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE.

TEN YEARS AGO, MY PARTNER HAD AN ACADEMY CLASSMATE KILLED IN BOULER AND HE BROUGHT ME YOUR NAME OFF "THE WALL". I STILL HAVE ONE AND PUT ONE AT WASHINGTON GATE.

TIME DOES SEEM TO FLY BY THE OLDER WE GET. I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE TWENTY YEARS HAS GONE BY SO FAST.

I LOST ONE OF MY TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN TWO WEEKS AGO AND HE WAS ONLY 23 YEARS OLD. HIS DEATH REMINDED ME OF THE SACRIFICE THAT ALL OF OUR ARMED FORCES MAKE.

CONTINUE TO REST IN PEACE, BROTHER.

To the family of Officer Derrick Schultz,
I came across your page today while checking on my sons page. I had not seen it before and wanted to respond. Our family knows and feels your pain. Our son was a military police officer and killed in a car accident while on patrol at the age of 20 and had only served six months in the Army. I want you to know that your family is in our families prayers and our loved ones will NEVER be forgotten and the service that they gave to our country in peace time or war time. May God give you strength each day until you see your loved one again. John 14:27

I think about you often, I think about the day we relieved you at Washington Gate. I think about the day myself and five of your freinds and brothers carried you to your resting place. Derrick, you are not forgotten, your smile lives on.

I served with the 57th at West Point. Many was the night I stood at Washington Gate, freezing cold or sweltering heat, bored out of my mind. Often I would wish that something, anything would happen. Be careful what you wish for. MP Schultz, R.I.P. Your spirt will forever watch over those who steped in to take your place.

Derrick was practically a "poster boy" MP. As sharp as they get. You didn't get into the Gate Guards squad otherwise. His death was tragic and I remember it like it was yesterday. I'm happy to see MP's as part of the memorial.

Derrick, you passed when I was just four hours old. Our worlds overlapped for a very short period of time. Anyway, thank you for all that you did to protect citizens and you will not be forgotten.
