Sixty five years ago Alje was my hero. I was a little girl then. I am an old woman now. Alje is still my hero. My throat still tightens, my eyes still fill with tears when I think of him.

Alje was my friend and my hero; and I was five years old when he was killed. The night he died he stood in my grandmother Ware's kitchen eating a fudgsicle, a treat he and I shared more than once. I recall pleading to go with him in his cruiser; in those days that was possible. Alje told me he was not coming back. His words haunt me still. Next morning I bounded into my parents room to ask about "my Alje." My father told me only that he had been killed, two shots in the back of the head. All newspaper clippings were kept out of our home and no one told me the whole truth. I learned the details of the tragedy as an adult. Poor Alje never got to see his own little girl, nor she him. At sixty-eight, my eyes still fill with tears when I think of Alje.
