I was nine years old in 1975, yet I remember the incident as if it took place yesterday. My father, then-a Riviera Beach Police Officer, responded to a telephone call from Det. Doug West, one of my dad's best friends and fellow officer, describing the incident. Soon thereafter we watched the news about the incident and excerpts from the funeral that took place a couple of days later. Later that year a baseball field was renamed to Runck's honor.

Well it's been around five and a half years since I've posted on this site about fallen Officer "Skip" Runck, Jr. I mentioned that back in 1993 when I was a brand new Officer in Riviera Beach my Field Training Officer Paul Peterson brought me into the Department's lobby and showed me Officer Runck's picture and Medal of Honor hanging on the wall. He told me to never forget his name and face and told me what he did and died for. Some 24 years later, I am now that "old guy" who is the Field Training Officer. I bring my new Officers into the lobby and show them that same picture and Medal of Honor and tell them to always remember what he did and died for. He is not forgotten.

Rest in peace Officer Runck. I remembered hearing of your slaying along with that of Hallandale Beach Officer, Austin Hepburn, Jr. killed in 1973. Thank you for your bravery. The residents of Riviera Beach have not forgotten you.

I know that he loved Donna very much. I was glad to see him happy. Its been over 40 years, but the hurt is still there.

I went to the police academy with "Skip" Runck. He was the first officer I knew who was killed in the line of duty and had a lasting impact on my career. Perhaps Skip's tradegy kept me safe.

Back in 1993 when I was a rookie and right out of the academy, my training officer Paul Peterson brought me into our Riviera Beach Police Department lobby and showed me a picture which still hangs in the lobby to this day. It was a picture of Officer Meredith Stanley Runck, Jr. with a Medal of Honor hanging from it. He told me to always remember that name and that face, and then proceeded to tell me what happened on that day he was gunned down. I have never forgotten it, still look at that picture, and always remember to be ever watchful. His sacrifice has made me a better Officer, and he will always be remembered.

I was just sitting here at my desk today passing the time at work when i decided to do a Google search for my grandfathers name, Meredith Stanley Runck. This was Skip's father, as well as my dad's father. I never had the pleasure of knowing my uncle Skip, as I wasn't born until 1978. The only way that I've ever known him was through all of the stories that my uncle Tim and my father Thomas B. Runck Sr. have told me throughout my life. I've just read all of the messages on this board, and I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. You have helped open my eyes to the man that "the uncle I never knew" was. For this I thank you!!
