Dear Rooney Family,

I am so sorry for you loss so many years ago. I have read multiple articles about the shooting and it really hit hard. I sat up late at night researching the shooting and the defendants involved.

I too lost a dear friend and neighbor North Carolina State Highway Patrol Master Trooper Kevin Conner. He was murdered by an offender on probation here during a traffic stop. I was sad and angry. The case for his justice is still pending.

I will be supervising one of the defendants in the case that was recently paroled by the NY Parole Board. I have supervised many people in my short career but none that has murdered a Parole Officer. In my honest opinion he should’ve never been set free. I will supervise him to the best of my ability and he will be strictly supervised for as long as I have the case. Rest In Peace Parole Officer Rooney, we will take it from here.

“Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.”

My former partner of almost 3 years was assassinated on 10 October 1985 in Jamaica Queens New York. He was the victim of a contract killing placed by a drug kingpin Lorenzo "Fat Cat" Nichols who Brian had arrested on parole violations. I think of Brian all the time. He was a kind, sociable , hard working Parole Officer and amateur magician who enjoyed preforming magic tricks to staff as well as the children of his Parolee's. Upon Brian's death he left behind his wife Susan and 18 month old son Thomas. Brian is buried at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury New York.

Parole Officers shine bright with honor and dilligence in a world that so desperately needs both. The most violent of offenders exist day to day shoulder to shoulder with many people. Most of these people will never know violence because the Parole Officer supervises these offenders despite the risk to their safety. I cannot measure the pride I feel to be associated with so many Parole Officers that do their jobs with the vehimence necessary to protect their communities from these offenders. Brian Rooney was one of us and will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my brother.

Though I never knew him, he was part of my Law Enforcement family and I will mourn this deep loss the rest of my life. My heart aches with all the losses we have suffered, and continue to suffer, through the years. God is our only peace in such incidents & our only real comfort comes from Him. May His strength, comfort & peace continue to be the sustaining force in the lives of all who knew this beloved officer; and may it somehow help to know that, even after all these years,he is respectfully remembered and his sacrifice deeply appreciated.

Brian was in the same training class as me and we were both rookies together. We became fast friends due to his wonderful sense of humor and remained friends despite being assigned to different areas. He served the State of New York proudly and courageously. Not a day goes by that I do not pause a moment to reflect on the sacrifice he made. I can easily imagine him looking down at our world now, smiling sardonically at how complex life is, and how easy it would be to let his memory sort of fade..well I am here to tell you, that for me and all those who knew you...it will never happen "palie"
