It has now been 75 years since the loss of Det. Renovato. He was shot and killed by one, Joe Coates who was dragging his "girlfriend", Virginia Garcia by the hair. Fred Renovato was "off-duty" at the time and was trying to assist Ms. Garcia when he was shot and killed. Joe Coates had knowledge that Renovato was a police officer and had previous run in's with officer, Renovato before, Renovato was 43 years old at the time of his death (Oct.13, 1938). Fred Coates was later electrocuted for the crime. Fred Renovato was my grandmother's half-brother.

Detective Renovato - You came to the aid of a a woman in distress, and paid for it with your life. Three Fridays ago, on a very rainy morning, I stood in the State Assembly chambers when your name was one of almost 250 read off during a motion regarding next month's Peace Officers Memorial Week. You are not forgotten.

Thank you for your service to the people of the City of Denver and the State of Colorado.

May God grant you eternal rest and may His perpetual light shine upon you.
