just got home from the memorial in washington dc - wow - as if you haven't been gone all these years. still the smell of you fresh in my nose. the way your vest hurt my arms as i gave you a hug when you came home - the sound of "how was your day today pop - catch any bad guys?" ring thru my ears. how it still hurts... oh man... how it still hurts. all i can say is "POP - I MISS YOU"

Hi Bro:

I was planning on doing Roll Call training for my Watch on the 20th Anniversary(sic) of that tragic day. However, I may not be assigned here, so I am conducting training tomorrow.

To the Friends and Family of Officer Rebel:

Be assured that His Memory lives on, far beyond the borders of Arizona. In fact, my "LAPD Sister" (Shelley Ramirez), is having goose bumps, as I type this.....

I salute you for your heroism and dedicated service to law enforcement. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones and stand at their sides to protect them as they journey through life. You are a true hero and heroes never die. You will never be forgotten.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It was 19 years ago today that we got that dreaded phone call, that you had been shot and killed. My poor sister that had to break the news. I don't think any of us will ever get over the loss. It never gets any easier, I always dread this month. It makes me sad to think of all the things we have missed doing together, watching the grandkids and great grand child grow up, how much you would have enjoyed them. I have to mention the other Ed Rebel who is out on the road doing a great job. Your name sake a 4 year old Belgian Malinois, he is a super dog and his handler is so proud of him, says he is always ready to go out there and do his job. I love you.

I think about Uncle Ed all the time. I happen to think about him today, and I hadn't realized the date. Aunt Jackie, he's not ever forgotten. His love is wrapped around you and everyone he holds dear. I'm sure he's still making things right and just only from above. Santa Cruz, CA

I went to the Memorial in Phoenix on Monday 7th May. What a roller coaster of emotions. I saw people I hadn't seen in years, it was such a comfort to be able to share the terrible grief, even after all these years, almost 19 years, and know that other people feel the same.

18 years to the day.... I'm still as sad as I was at 7 on a plane home to say good-bye. I think of you everyday and everyday feels like the first day I had to learn to live without you. I miss homemade waffles (that you ate with your fingers); Gran doesn't make them anymore. I miss everything. Your uniform hangs in my closet and I think your PACE t-shirt still smells like you.
It warms my heart to know that you made such an impression on the world before you left. So thank you to all who have care so much about the man we all love and miss so much.
Forever in our heart and I know you will always watch over us. Love you T

He was a gentle man, a caring, generous man. A man who loved his family and his friends and co-workers like family. Even in death he was generous, my brother was a organ doner, several lives were saved by him the day he died. I miss him.
