Reflections for Policeman Hermon Myron Personius

I see I have many Personius cousins. I found this article a few years ago. Came across it on my computer today while looking through files. Hemon was my great grandfather’s (Franklin Cornelius Personius) brother, so my great great uncle. It’s amazing how many of the Personius lines there are and all seem to be related. They all had big families.

Your killer may have escaped off into the night but he surely faced his justice at a later time in a different place. Rest in peace always knowing that no passage of time will ever erase your service and sacrifice.

You are still remembered, even after 110 years. No amount of time could ever make this country forget your service and sacrifice to our country. RIP

My father, Alfred Henry Personius was 12 years old when his father, Hemon, was killed. Hemon and his wife, Eva Butterfield Personius, had seven children. My father told me that after his father was killed he had to go to work doing things like herding cows, etc. I am thankful that Hemon, my grandfather, is remembered at the Peace Officers Memorial.

The City of Valley City appointed their first police chief on May 14th, 1883. That was the start of the brotherhood of law enforcement in Valley City, North Dakota. Since that time, the Valley City Police Department has continued on serving the citizens in the community. Hemon Myron Personius died in the line of duty serving the citizens he was sworn to protect. Since the Valley City Police Department started in 1883, Hemon Myron Personius is the only officer to die in the line of duty. As we hire new officers at the Valley City Police Department, we talk about the tragic incident that took Hemon Personius’s life. Even today, when law enforcement officers attend the “Street Survival” training, in North Dakota and across the country, Hemon Personius’s name is honored by law enforcement officers across the nation as one of our fallen officers from North Dakota. His name will not be forgotten within the Valley City Police Department.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 104th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was murdered on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

How nice that your family found this memorial site.

Rest In Peace.

I'm the grandson of Hemon's son Giles. A few years ago one of my relations passed along an old newspaper clipping of the story of Hemon's death. Quite a story. The old homestead outside Valley City is still owned by the family.

I am just beginning to find out more about my family tree and am honored to find my great grandfather listed here. My grandmother was only 12 when he died but my father was always very proud of him as I now am too.

I wonder if I am a relative? My brother, Tim Personius, is a police officer in Washington State. He is also very interested in our genealogy. Whether we are related or not, I think it is a good thing to honor the fallen like this. Thank you.

I grew up knowing the story of my grandfather's death in the line of duty. My father was a teenager when his father died so unfortunately I never had the chance to know Heman Personius. I'm very proud that his name is on the memorial.

I never got to met my grandfather as my father was only 16 when his dad died. He is a true hero and we will always keep his memory alive.
