To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 38th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for the solace of all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Dear Don,

I am taking a Citizen's Police Academy Class in Kentucky. I wanted to get to know members of our local law enforcement team. As I looked through the manual for the course, I noticed a website for fallen officers. I looked at the list from Kentucky then I remembered YOU! It has been so long ago, but I remember the day so clearly when I came home from school and found out you'd been killed. It was such a sad day for our entire family. I wish you were still with us. I will always remember you. Please continue to watch over all the officers at the BPD and the officers here at the Florence PD.

Mr. Owens,
I want to thank you for being such a wonderful friend to my father while he served with you at Bloomington Police Dept.. I still remember the moment the phone rang at home as my father and I were wrestling in the floor. I got up and answered the phone and the dispatcher asked for my father. I told daddy that he had a phone call. He playfully punched my shoulder as he went to the couch and sat down to take the call. My father instantly began weeping and crying out "God No". I ran for my mother as I was terrified in seeing my father crying and upset as my father was, is and always will be my hero! I guess it is true that unbendable steel can in fact bend. I now know what you meant to my father and for that, I THANK YOU for being such a friend.

A Soldier

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Don,

Randy Williamson worked his last shift today, March 30, 2007. He is officially retiring from the force after 37 years. He has worked his way up the ranks since you passed, he has been Assistant Chief for sevaral years now. There was a nice article in the HT today about it. Don, he is still beating himself up over not being the one to escort McDaniels to court on August 15, 1975. You see, Randy was suppose to have taken him to court that day, but you volunteered because you were closer to station. He is still very emotional about it and has carried the guilt since that horrible day. Don, I just ask that you would somehow convey to Randy through God or one of his angels that it was not his fault, and that he would be comforted and released from the gulit he has carried for all these years. Thank you brother. God bless you.

Captain Owens,

I have looked at your picture many times in the front lobby of the Bloomington Police Department. The first time I saw it and read of your heroism was in 1998 when I was waiting in the lobby for a ride along with one of the officers. I was in awe. In 1999 I was an intern at the department, and I would pass the picture on a daily basis, not giving a second thought to the true magnitude of the sacrifice you gave. But in 2000, I was waiting in that same lobby for my final interview with the board of safety to become a Bloomington Police Officer, and I looked up and I saw your picture on the wall again. As I looked at it, I realized that you gave your life and payed the ultimate price. I was hired by BPD in 2001. I still see your picture in the lobby, and I am a memeber of Lodge #88 that is now named after you. I want you to know that you have inspired me and I am proud to have served on the same department as you. I think you would be proud of what the Bloomington Police Department has become today. You have made all of us proud.

Don,
You were killed many years before I joined BPD. Your memory is still alive here. Just a few years after you were killed, FOP Lodge 88 was named after you. Don Owens Lodge 88. You would be proud. You are a hero to all of us at BPD.
Thanks Don
BPD brother
