Detective Kevin Hawkins died of kidney cancer, which he contracted after inhaling toxic chemicals and materials while working hundreds of hours at Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Center terrorist attack of 9/11.
Detective Hawkins was a U.S Marine Corps veteran who had served with the New York City Police Department for 20 years and was assigned to the Mayor's Security Detail. He is survived by his wife and three children.
