Police Officer Joseph Meier was struck and killed by a vehicle while standing on the sidewalk at Ninth Street and Chambers Street.

A car entered the area and struck a car parked next to where Officer Meier was standing. That car was then pushed into Officer Meier, inflicting severe injuries. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with manslaughter, felonious wounding, and careless driving.

Officer Meier had been with the agency for 14 years and was survived by his wife.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 83rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
