Assistant Police Chief David McIver was beaten, shot, and killed when he went to the scene of a one vehicle accident.

Chief McIver was at a service station when he saw a car go speeding by and then crash into a roadside ditch. Earlier the four occupants, three men, 21, 22, and 25, and a woman, 31, had committed a robbery. The four attacked the chief, beat him, then took his gun and shot him twice.

All four were apprehended. Two men were convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole. The other man and the woman were convicted of accessory to murder and robbery. The man was sentenced to 10 years and the woman to 30.
