Lieutenant Edward McDermott suffered a fatal heart attack while assigned a communications command post on the onset of the 1980 Miami Riots.

Lieutenant McDermott had served with the agency for 24 years and had previously served with the United States Air Force. He is survived by two children and two grandchildren.
