Constable McCheane succumbed to stab wounds received the previous night at 2315 hours when he attempted to arrest a man at a tenement house at 13th and Webster.
The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to 10 years. On April 18, 1871, he and nine other inmates escaped from the Nebraska Penitentiary.
Constable McCheane was survived by his wife, six daughters, and a son by a previous wife.
