Sergeant Earl White and Police Officer Lindora Smith were killed when their patrol car collided with another patrol car at Holmur and Elmhurst streets during a pursuit.

The two officers had attempted to stop the vehicle for reckless driving at 2:40 am. In addition to Sergeant White and Officer Smith, a police Explorer who was on a ride-along was killed in the collision. The officer in the second patrol car was injured.

Sergeant White had served with the Detroit Police Department for 22 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

My name is Student Police Officer Eric Chaffee with the Detroit Police Dept . I have the Honor of carrying your husband's and father , with me as my silent partner . I did not know him or his partner Officer Smith personally , but I have the upmost respect for their service, dedication and sacrifice they made for the safety of the city and the Detroit Police dept.
I will do my best to carry their names and memory, with dignity, Honor and Courage .
My sincerest condolences for your families loss , as I know its a hole that can never be filled . you have my deepest sympathy and unwavering support .
