Gregory A. May

Corporal May and Trooper Carey Poetzman were killed in a helicopter accident while responding to a medical transport request.

The officers had been dispatched from the Frederick Airport, in Frederick County, to Carroll County, for a gunshot victim. Their helicopter encountered Instrument Meteorological Conditions and crashed in a heavily wooded area of Leakin Park, located in Baltimore City, Maryland. The crash caused the Maryland State Police to look for a more powerful and safer aircraft.

Corporal May was survived by his wife and son.

34 years ago yesterday I was working day shift in the Southwestern District, Baltimore Maryland. I was a patrol sergeant in this district and upon hearing the news we conducted a search for Trooper 3 event thought we were told it was missing in Anne Arundel County. As the heavy fog started to lift in the area the wreckage was spotted in one of the heavy wooded hills next to Hilton Parkway. I was the first Sergeant on scene with a few officers who had already made it to the crash scene. I was the one who pulled the pilot from the downed Bell Ranger with the guidance of the TIS officers and Baltimore Fire Department on scene. I will always remember this day.
