Robert W. Martin

Patrolman Martin was shot and killed by a murder suspect who was known to him. Patrolman Martin had a good reputation in the community and the suspect's grandmother and the suspect arranged to turn the man in to Patrolman Martin. Before taking the suspect into custody he allowed the man, who was mildly retarded, to go back into his home to retrieve personal belongings. As Patrolman Martin waited on the couch the suspect exited the bedroom and shot Patrolman Martin at point-blank range.

The suspect accidentally shot himself as he attempted to flee the scene. He was convicted of murdering Patrolman Martin and executed on January 26, 1992.

Patrolman Martin had been with the agency for nine years and was survived by his wife, son and two daughters.
