Trooper LaVelle succumbed to injuries received in a motorcycle accident two months earlier while on patrol on Route 84 near Rapids City.

Trooper LaVelle, a WWI Army veteran, had served with the Illinois State Police for 1½ years and was assigned to District 7. He had been in law enforcement for ten years.
