Patrolman Koppenhaver succumbed to injuries sustained three months earlier when he was involved in a crash in the city of Nanticoke.

He was on patrol and on his way to the barracks when his motorcycle was stuck by a vehicle making an illegal turn on Main Street near State Street.

Patrolman Koppenhaver had served with the Pennsylvania State Highway Patrol for one year.
