Patrolman Ernest Jones was shot and killed when he responded to a noise complaint at an apartment complex at 257 Highland Street.

When the occupants opened the door they opened fire, fatally wounding Patrolman Jones. The investigation revealed that the suspects had just committed a bank robbery and were involved in an argument with each other over the proceeds. All of the suspects were apprehended and convicted.
