Police Officer Jones was shot and killed while attempting to break up a crap game at 13th street and Rodman Street. Despite being mortally wounded he was able to return fire and wound the suspect who shot him and seriously wound the suspect's brother. Both were charged with murder.

On October 21, 1920, the gunman, 30, was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 16 years.

Officer Jones had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for two years.
