Duane Curtis Johnson

Police Officer Duane Johnson was shot and killed by a robbery suspect in Chinatown at about 2:00 pm.

Officer Johnson and his partner had responded to the store and were let in by one of the subjects, who was posing as a store employee. When the two officers entered the men immediately opened fire, killing Officer Johnson and wounding his partner.

The shooter was apprehended and sentenced to life.

Officer Johnson was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and daughter.

I am truly thankful to the Johnson family for choosing me for this honor. I am humbled and grateful. Like Officer Curtis, I look forward to a career of serving and protecting my community. Once again, this has been an honor I will never forget.
