Officer Chadwick was shot and killed while responding to a noise complaint at an apartment complex in the early morning hours. The suspect was a mentally ill man, known as the "Birdman," who was shoveling birdseed to hundreds of birds, causing a lot of noise. As Officer Chadwick approached the suspect the man suddenly turned and shot at him with two 9 mm handguns in ambush attack. The suspect was later shot and killed by a police sniper.

Shane (167),
It's been over 25 years and not a day goes by without reflection of the sacrifice you made for your family, fellow officers and the City of Great Falls. Although I had been working the streets a few more years than you I learned from you every time we worked together or shared some time off-duty. Your strength, ability to remain focused and determination to get the job done was unmatched. Thank you for your sacrifice and bravery. Your short time on this earth made a positive impact on all that knew you my friend. My life has been spared several times since that fateful day on 9/7/94. I owe it to lessons learned and to you for watching over me. I know you always have my back my brother.
