Deputy Sheriff Dennis Herring was shot and killed as he and another deputy responded to a disturbance at a home on State Highway 49 in Browntown at about 12:10 pm.

Deputy Herring volunteered for the call despite having finished his shift because he was familiar with the house. When they arrived at the home they encountered a man experiencing delusions while firing a shotgun in the house and claiming that his parents were dead inside. As Deputy Herring stepped onto the front porch the man shot him with a shotgun.

The subject was apprehended and convicted of Deputy Herring's murder.
