Roger J. Harty

Prison Guard Roger Harty was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver near the intersection of Angelica Street and Broadway.

He was crossing the street in front of the station at approximately 10:45 pm when he was struck by a speeding vehicle. The driver of the vehicle then turned off his lights and fled at a high rate of speed. Despite there being several witnesses, no one was able to describe the vehicle and no suspects were ever apprehended.

Guard Harty was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and had served in law enforcement for 25 years. He was assigned to the Angelica Street Station. He was survived by his wife and three children.

On today, the 100th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just for your Community but for our Country as well when you served with the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
