Officer Johnny Harris was shot and fatally wounded and his partner was critically wounded while responding to a man with gun call at a local residence. A third officer shot and wounded the suspect. Officer Harris died at a local hospital later that night. Officer Harris' partner, the first Muskegon County woman officer, recovered from her wounds.

The suspect, an ex-convict, was convicted of murder. He died in prison September 15, 1976.

Officer Harris had served with the Muskegon Heights Police Department for 2 years, and is survived by his wife and three children.

It's been well over 40 years since Orlando introduced us. I remain saddened with your loss from this life.

Over my 39 years "on the job" I was to lose even other fellows in our service. Fellows who with you I'm sure maintained a watch over for all of us who remained in this life, while on the job.
