Officer James Harris was shot and killed near the intersection of Edgewood Street and Walker Street while investigating a stalled suspicious vehicle.
Officer Harris had stopped a vehicle after receiving complaints from a citizen that the vehicle had tried to run him down. Officer Harris ordered the two men to place their hands on the hood of the car. One of the men gave the other man a 9 mm handgun and the man then opened fire on Officer Harris, striking him three times. The suspect then shot and killed a bystander as both men fled the scene.
The other suspect was shot and killed a short time later after seriously wounding another officer. The shooter was arrested and convicted of capital murder. The conviction was overturned and he was released but died in an automobile accident shortly after returning to Mexico.
Officer Harris had served with the Houston Police Department for five years and had previously served as a security policeman for the United States Air Force for four years.

View all 27 ReflectionsDad! I cannot wait to meet you in Heaven! Being that I was 20 months young when you were horrifically taken from our family, I do not have memories of you. I have heard tons of stories, seen lots of pictures, and have been told that I act just like you! I literally cannot wait to feel what it is like to have a hug from my handsome father! Thank You for your service, for protecting your community, and for loving what you did. You died in your “element”. You were highly thought of by your fellow brothers and sisters in blue! That brings such joy to my heart! You have a son-in-love named Shannon that wishes he knew you. He even has your badge tattooed over his heart.....he loves you and honors you! You have 3 amazing and beautiful grandchildren. Jace is almost 16. Gage is almost 13. And Lace is 4. You would have been the most incredible Grand-daddy to walk the face of the earth! Those 3 grand babies know you. They hear of you all of the time. You are very much present in our lives, even though it is not physical. I pray daily that I can be the wife and mom that God wants me to be, and that I make you proud! You will always be my Angel until I get to fall into your arms in Heaven! I love you most! ~Megan~
